Three times, count them, three times over the weekend, I had someone make a comment to me regarding the school at which I teach. And their comments were not positive, either. Unfortunately, my high school has a bad reputation. It had one when I was in high school at the rival high, and apparently it still does. I fear this is because it is predominately minority. However, I have decided that demographics are a very unfair way to base a judgement. So next time, instead of biting through my tongue trying not to say something ugly back, I am going to be prepared....
A few reasons why my high school is the bomb. Read 'em and weep, haters!
1. We were voted AGAIN by Newsweek magazine as one of the top 1,000 public high schools in the nation. We were the only one in our district, and one of only 4 in my city.
2. We lead the nation with advancements in our journalism and broadcasting programs.
3. Our last years graduates went on to attend schools like Yale, Washington and Lee, UNC Chapel Hill, NYU, Dartmouth, Duke, UGA, Auburn...I could go on.
4. The majority of our faculty has an advanced degree. And many are National Board Certified Teachers....I am going to have to find out exact percentages so that I can really be armed next time around.
5. Our student body raises over 10,000 canned goods for Gods Storehouse. And they do this EVERY YEAR. We also raise a ton of money for United Way, not to mention coats to donate to shelters and prom dresses to donate to those in need.
6. We are the biggest contributor to Families Helping Families...an adoption program for Christmas time in which classes, clubs and individuals adopt a family and give them gifts for Christmas. Our school adopts upwards of 60 families from the community each Christmas.
So the next time someone makes a face, asks me if I am afraid when I go to work, or if I have to wear a bullet proof vest to school (true comments!), I will have some ammunition to fire back!

Good for your school :) That's so great that they have such good traditions and service!
As a member of the class of '97 of your high school, I am still proud to be a Cavalier. The Haters are just jealous!
THROUGH GOOD AND BAD WE WILL BEAR THE NAME OF RICHLAND NORTHEAST HIGH!
I don't know anything about RNE that hasn't come from you, but it sounds like a great school. As we've talked about, your stories make me want to be a teacher. And if I ever actually do that, then maybe you can hook me up at RNE!!
